MID CENTURY MODERN

Enhancing the interior of a pottery collector’s stylish 60’s house

The concept behind the refurbishment of this Austin Vernon designed 1960’s ‘ranch’ house on the edge of Dulwich Wood takes inspiration from the mid-century cues in the house with its sloping ceilings and glazed windows between rooms offering framed views through the house and beyond into the landscape.

As you enter the kitchen through a new sliding door, a colourful tiled panel screens the work area. Bespoke cabinets are crafted from birch ply with doors of solid oak lacquered pale pink and topped by a terrazzo work surface. The removal of a flat ceiling has allowed the full expression of the sloping roof.

A new inhabited storage wall has been inserted between the entrance level playroom and upper main bedroom. On one side there is a reclaimed teak framed wardrobe with sliding doors inspired by Japanese domestic architecture. These open to reveal an internal window through to the playroom on the other side where a chamfered recess provides a place to sit below a teak shelf to display pottery with practical drawers below for toy storage.
